| PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLNIn nineteenth-century America, the "media" consisted of the local newspaper or simply word of mouth, and crimes and trials were basically local events. Those that generated widespread coverage were usually of tremendous national significance. The assassination of President Abraham Lincoln was certainly one such event. On April 15, 1865, President Lincoln prepared to attend a play at Fords Theater in a much deserved celebration of Union victory in the Civil War. John Wilkes Booth and his accomplices, aware of Lincoln's plans for the evening, began to make plans of their own. Once the Lincolns were seated and enjoying the play, Booth crept up behind them and fired a bullet into Lincoln's head. Booth then attempted to leap off the balcony railing, but his boot became entangled and caused him to fall onto the stage below. He escaped through a side door before Mary Lincoln's scream could alert everyone. The chase was on for the assassin and rewards were offered. Americans paid close attention to newspaper coverage of the hunt. After Booth's accomplices were located and captured, during what became known as the Great Conspiracy Trial of 1865, details of Booths plan began to emerge. Booth and his accomplices had originally planned to kidnap Lincoln, bring him to Richmond, and demand ransom from the North, including the return of Confederate prisoners, the donation of military supplies, and renewed negotiations from a position of Southern strength. The jury convicted four accomplices—Lewis Paine, George Atzerodt, Davy Herold, and Mary Surratt—of conspiracy to murder, and they were hanged for their crimes. Two others were given life sentences. The assassin himself, however, was not part of this trial, since Booth did not live to see his day in court. After leading his pursuers through winding roads in rural Virginia, he attempted to hide in a remote farmhouse. Accounts of Booth's demise vary widely, but it is likely that he died as a result of bullet wounds sustained when he resisted arrest. Nonetheless, the intense media attention paid to the politically motivated assassination of the president, and those responsible for it, has ensured that history will never forget the name John Wilkes Booth.
