| THE SUPREME COURTToday, the Supreme Court of the United States, the nation's highest judicial body, coequal with the executive and legislative branches of government, is housed in a spectacular Neoclassical structure in Washington, D.C. Yet despite the importance of the Court to the functioning of our government, the Supreme Court did not find its current home until 1935. The Supreme Court originally held its sessions in the Merchant Exchange Buildina in New York City. The building, which was not designed for legal proceedings, had none of the symbolic significance of the Courts current, permanent home. In addition, there was little ceremony or formality to accompany these historic meetings. Since there were no antechambers or robing rooms for the justices, they put their robes on in full view of everyone. Visitors could come and go as they pleased. In fact, Court sessions became known among habitues as opportunities to meet the opposite sex. The Court moved with the Capitol to Philadelphia in 1790, then relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1800. It spent its first decade in Washington meeting m numerous places on Capitol Hill, including a tavern on First Street. It was not until 1819 that the Supreme Court met for the first time in a place built specifically for its use. The Old Supreme Court Chamber, as it is now called, was designed by the architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe. In November 1806, Latrobe undertook the rebuilding of the Capitol s north wing and planned a room on the ground floor for the Supreme Court. The room served many purposes: it was a committee room, a law library, a meeting room, and a storage room. In the chamber the justices' desks were raised one foot higher than the central floor. A plaster relief over the fireplace depicts the figure of Justice—without blindfold—flanked by Fame, who holds the U.S. Constitution under the rays of the rising sun, and an eagle that rests one foot upon law books. Although the Court met for decades in this chamber, it was nevertheless considered temporary housing. In 1860, the Supreme Court moved from the Old Supreme Court room to a vacated Senate chamber. The former meeting room became the Court s law library. Despite the lack of permanency of its lodgings, the Court established several traditions, including the symbolic judicial handshake, which indicated the justices' unity of purpose, and the placing of twenty quill pens on counsel tables each day the Court was in session. The Court attracted a great deal of attention from Washington society, who considered attending court sessions a fashionable pursuit. After seventy-five years in "temporary" housing, the Supreme Court finally got a permanent home, the building that stands today in Washington, D.C. In 1929, Chief Justice and former president William Howard Taft persuaded Congress to authorize a separate and permanent home for the Supreme Court. Construction began in 1932 and was finished in 1935. Its monumental Neoclassical design suggests the dignity and importance of the Court as a coequal branch of the U.S. government. The building is a veritable temple of Justice, measuring 385 feet from east to west and 304 feet from north to south. At its greatest height, it is four stories tall. Sixteen marble columns of the Corinthian order form the majestic porch of the Court's main entrance. On the portico frieze the words "Equal Justice Under Law" are engraved. To either side of the grand staircase sit two sculptural allegories executed by James Earle Fraser. To the right of the steps sits the Guardian or Authority of Law, a male figure who holds a tablet of law. Behind the table appears a sheathed sword that indicates enforcement through law. The left-hand figure is the Contemplation of Justice. This female statue carries a book of laws under her left hand and in her right hand holds a small figure of a blindfolded Justice. A sculptural relief by Robert Alken decorates the triangular pediment. Entitled Liberty Enthroned Guarded by Order and Authority, the group features allegories of Liberty, Order, and Authority as well as representations of prominent American legal figures and those involved in the creation of the Supreme Court. The interior is equally monumental. In the column-lined Great Hall that leads to the Court's chamber, busts of all of the former chief justices adorn the walls. The chamber itself is grand, with a 44-foot ceiling and twenty-four marble columns. The justices sit behind a raised bench, the focal point and symbolic center of the chamber.
